“KONSERT POWER ROCK 2009” presented by Xtreme Music Productions.

The real RocknRolla
By Christopher Toh, TODAY | Posted: 29 January 2009 0928 hrs

It was supposed to have been the mother of all Malay rock concerts. Legendary Malaysian rock band Wings was set to celebrate their 21st anniversary with a concert at Suntec City on Nov 7 last year.

However, just days before the show, the organisers announced that Wings would not be coming to town after all. Instead, the show would be headlined by what were originally the guest artistes — rock band Kristal, and several members from rock outfits Lovehunters, Lefthanded and May.

No concrete explanation was given, although the Malay newspapers reported that there was a “miscommunication” between Awie and the promoter, and the blogosphere was rife with speculation. Last Friday, Awie, the lead singer from Wings, cleared the air and apologised to fans.

WHY HE BAILED

“I just want to say sorry to the fans. It’s not that I wanted to purposely spite them,” he told Today over the phone from Kuala Lumpur.

According to Awie, the promoter had reneged on the sum that was owed. Instead of paying the agreed 50 per cent before the show, Awie had only been paid “a few thousand”. And the promoter had started fudging when Awie pressed the issue.

“She offered thousands of excuses,” Awie said. After attempts to meet up with the promoter fell through, Awie, in frustration, decided to cancel the show.

“Really, I tried my best to help, but … I had to protect the interests of my friends — Wings — because I was the middleman, and I didn’t want them to think that I was sabotaging them either,” he continued. “So, I’m very sorry. That’s all I can say about it.”

The promoter could not be contacted for a comment by press time.

Still, Awie is making up for it. Fans have already started snapping up tickets for Konsert Power Rock 2009 at Republic Polytechnic this weekend. Organised by Xtreme Music, the concert will also feature Rahmat (from Mega), Ali XPDC and Shamrin (of Fotograf) who will be backed by musicians from Meditasi, Lefthanded, Yakamashi, Def Gab C and Metalasia.

Already, all top-tier tickets ($88 and $128) have sold out, and organisers are now offering a “clearance sale”, with all the remaining tickets going at $34.

That’s provided, however, that things go well with Awie’s father who has been hospitalised with a viral infection.

“I’m not too sure what kind of viral infection it is but it’s quite serious,” Awie said.

“He had to have a second operation. Hopefully, he’ll pull through.”

At press time, Xtreme Music had confirmed Awie’s presence.

Awie himself said he will be “rocking out” with his own solo numbers and Wings hits, adding that he really likes performing in Singapore because the fans are “crazy”.

“Yeah, the last time we performed in Singapore, the fans threw their bras on to the stage, and started throwing money at me. I was like, ‘Wow!’ You don’t expect this from Singapore,” he said.

ON GOOD WIVES AND SECRET CULTS

Awie, born Ahmad Azhar bin Othman, began his career fronting Wings, which scored hits with albums such as Hukum Karma, Teori Domino and Bazooka Penaka.

He left the band in 1994 after reportedly disagreeing with the other members, but re-joined in 2002 after the band received lukewarm fan response to his replacements.

In between, Awie pursued a solo singing career as well as an acting career, and starred in films such as Sembilu (1994), Baik Punya Cilok (2005) and Antoo Fighter (2008).

The 40-year-old rocker has four children, two from a previous marriage, and two from his current wife Rozana Misbun. Thankfully, he said, juggling family and his job isn’t as hard as some might think. “My wife is really very understanding. She knows I have to do my work.

“And when it’s work, that’s my top priority. Thank God I have a good and understanding wife.”

Of course, with great fame comes greater chances of being tabloid fodder. Last December, it was reported that Awie headed part of a secret society called Kumpalan Naga in Malaysia, and that he gets RM3,600 ($1,500) for every member who joins. “That (rumour is) irritating,” he groused. “I’m suing them because that’s really too much! It really hurts my reputation and I don’t want people to believe that. I’ve already talked to my lawyers.

“But at least people are still talking about me, good or bad,” he conceded. “It’s free publicity. They say all kinds of things, but now I’m immune to all that. So, thanks to all the people who are talking good or bad about me; I don’t get mad from that. Thanks very much!”

Right now, the actor-singer has no plans on slowing down. In fact, he’s still chasing a dream: To perform with Metallica.

“I think everybody would love to play with Metallica. Maybe if they come to do a show in Malaysia or even Singapore. It’s my dream! I mean, I’ve played with (rock band) Europe, so nothing is impossible!”

I’m On Facebook

I’m been using Facebook for almost 2 months now. Before that I keep ignoring the invitations to join Facebook as I think this online social network medium is just a waste of time. The reason of me joining Facebook was because a friend of mine keen uploading the photos of me in his Facebook. So to get my photos, I had to join in.

I really like Facebook because I managed to find more old school friends here than in Friendster. It’s good to know just how well the person from the past is doing. The status function really help me keeps in touch with them. Most of the girls are married while there are still some guys/girls that are still single. Hehe… I’m not alone…. Oh, from the “Relationship Status”, I know who they are married to. Some of them married their secondary schoolmates.

The tagging of profiles to the pictures also refreshed the memories I had. Some of them look different when they were young and some that I can still recognised them. It’s also good that they used their real names here, really easy to find them. But I still have problems finding my Chinese friends though. There are celebrities’ pages and school alumni pages. The school alumni pages helped me find someone I used to make friend with and making new friends with some that I have not have the opportunities to say “hi” to. Currently I have 29 schoolmates in my list. More will come soon as some of them have not accepted me as their friends (maybe because I didn’t use my real name). Other than my schoolmates, there are 44 Malaysian and Singapore celebrities, 12 football players, 9 ex-colleagues and the rest make up of bloggers, people who I added and people who added me. I have 198 friends now; I’m still searching for the rest of them…

Other than adding friends and celebrities, uploading and tagging photos and adding comments to status and photos, I do play some of their addictive games. I started with “Battle Of The Bands”, but stop playing regularly when I reached Fame Level 27, getting the “Super Rocker” title, gaining Overall Position 89779, with 4265 Skill, earning $3,780,200 per hour, bought most of the gears (Squier Stratocaster, Bass, Ephiphone Les Paul, Flying V, Peavey Raptor, Fender Telecaster, Paul Reed Smith Custom, Gibson Les Paul Studio, Fender American Standard Stratocaster, Microphone, Drum Set, Sonor Force Drum Set, Casio WK-3800 Keyboard, Crate Amp, Epiphone Valve Junior, Marshall JCM800, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier and Line6 Vetta II) while waiting to gain Frame Level 30 to buy the Gretsch Electromatic Hollowbody guitars.

Next is the “Owned” game where you buy your friends’ picture. Currently I’m ranked 1st among my friends, worth at $190,772,318. You can buy me if you got $134,971,299. I scored 222 in “Bowling Buddies” and ranked third. I wondered how the people can get the full 300 points. Any tricks anyone?

I played “Pet society” for a couple of days. Eating, playing, bathing, visiting, hugging, kissing, joking and watching all day long. I login today and find some gifts send to me. Thanks girls. I’m still on Promising Prospect stage. I like “Premier League Picks”, currently on 25 points. Scored 7 out of 9 this week games correct (choose either win, lose or draw) with one game yet to be played later tonight. A lot of people can predict perfectly. Surely they could win big in illegal betting.

Lastly my favourite is the “Motorcycle Madness”. Named “Mat Racer”, I now owned a Boss Hoss ZZ4. Currently on level 27, just a few points less than a friend of mine. Hopefully I can beat him soon when I got the money to buy the Dodge Tomahawk that cost $400,000. I just need $5,862 more. My Race History: 1123 Wins, 141 Losses and $426,935 of Race winnings.

Enough of what I like. Here is what I dislike. Emails notification, my mail got spammed because by default it is not switched off. Profile pages are not available if you are not on their friends list. Most of the time, you can’t guess if they are your friends with their small (covered) profile picture. There is no photo editor since some people do not like their face to be in the pictures I uploaded. I had to remove the whole picture when someone requested I took out their pictures.

First Takes: Transporter 3

Just watched the Transporter part 3 and it’s not as bad as described by Imraneo. Maybe he disliked the lady in the movie, Natalya Rudakova. The movie was released on November 26, 2008 in the US. Anyway the black Audi is awesome!

The Plot:
Frank Martin (Jason Statham) has been pressured into transporting Valentina (Natalya Rudakova), the kidnapped daughter of Leonid Vasilev (Jeroen Krabbe), through the use of a device attached to his wrist which will explode if Frank goes more than 75 feet from his car. Vasilev is the head of the Environmental Protection Agency for Ukraine. He must travel from Marseilles through Stuttgart and Budapest until he ends up in Odessa on the Black Sea. With the help of Inspector Tarconi (Francois Berleand), Frank must contend with the people who strong-armed him into taking the job, agents sent by the Ukraine government to intercept him, and the general non-cooperation of his passenger. Despite Valentina’s cynical disposition and Frank’s resistance to get involved, Frank and Valentina fall for each other, while escaping from one life-threatening situation after another. Yipee… My New Office Chair Leg!

On Sept 12 2008, I bought an office chair for SGD$139.10 (inc. 7% GST) from a shop near my home. After sitting for a few hours, I notice that I can’t move the chair freely while sitting on it. That the reason why the chair is a bit cheaper than the chairs at COURT that cost around SGD$170.

Yipee... My New Office Chair Leg!
See the new chair with tilt, arm rests and full headrests, the design of the leg is so bad that it will bend when you sit on it.

About 2 months later, while resting on the chair, I feel that the chair a bit slanted backward. I went to check and found one of the legs had just broken. Before I left the shop, the seller told me that there is no warranty for furniture, but they will help change the parts. So I went to the shop and told them about the broken leg. They make a call to the chair manufacturer and told me to come a few days later to change the part.

Yipee... My New Office Chair Leg!

Did call them a few time, either the part had not come or the guy is on off day. Finally last Saturday they say I can come and exchange the part. The guy told me to just bring the leg, without the hydraulic and base parts, but I can’t get it out so I bring the whole thing without the chair.

Yipee... My New Office Chair Leg!
Yipee… My new office chair leg!

They too couldn’t take out the leg and accidently broke the hydraulic part, so I get a new hydraulic part too. The manufacturer had glued the parts together.

Yipee... My New Office Chair Leg!
The hydraulic parts and base.

Yipee... My New Office Chair Leg!
The combined parts. Notice the design is different from the earlier one?

The SGD$38 Ticket.

What was supposed to be the 21st Anniversary of WINGS’ concert was turned into Kristal’s concert with guest artists Nash, Mus and Yazid of Lefthanded, May and Lovehunters respectively. The last time I watched Wings performed live was the “Konsert Perdana – Rock Lives On Without Drugs” on May 4, 1990 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium performing with Search.

Aida Atan the spoke person of Rockerzz Rulezz stated in her sms to Berita Harian’s reporter (Berita Harian news on Nov 5, 2008) that Awie and Wings will not be coming to Singapore. There was a miss-communicating between Rockerzz Rulezz and Awie since they were negotiating through his ex-personal assistance who did not informed Awie about the deal that had been made.

But Awie seem aware of the concert as stated by a blogger in his blog posted two months ago on Sept 4, 2008 where Awie informed his fans of the upcoming 21st Anniversary concert. Wings’ official website too stated that they are coming to Singapore.

Rockerzz Rulezz - All Starzz Concert 08

The Wings 21st Anniversary Poster.

There must be other reasons why they cancel/postpone it. Maybe because they only managed to sell about 1,300 tickets was the reason? Prices of the free seating/standing cost SGD$68, if you buy early it will cost SGD$50, a biker forummer selling at SGD$35 and you can get SGD$25 from the Merbuk Platoon guys. So I guess they will lose more if Awie and gang had come. Just imagine with 1300 people buying the original price of SGD$68, do you think SGD$88,000 is enough to pay Wings, Suntec and equipments rental and crew members?

Why I said that it is Kristal’s concert? If you do not know, Kristal is Awie’s students. If you ever watched their performances, it is quite similar to Wings. I think Awie recommended Rockerzz Rulezz to take them as their replacement.

Ok, enough of the facts and theories. Let rock and roll! I’m not aware that the concert had shifted half an hour earlier. Jalibhoy too did not inform me that it will start at 7.30pm. So I say ok that he pick me up at 7.15pm. We reached Suntec City around 8.20pm and found that there are many people loitering outside the entrance to the Hall 603. I’m not sure whether they are not aware that Wings will not be there or something had gone wrong. Surely there is something wrong when at 8.20pm the show had not even started! Checking the ticket that I just bought, it stated that the show will start at 7.30pm. It is almost an hour and nothing happened?

We decided to enter the hall. When we reached the door, the guy told us to go to the table on the right of us to have our tickets torn. Only one guy did the tearing. Another guy near him doing nothing and suddenly he asked me what in my bag. So this guy’s duty is checking bags. I said camera and he told me he still need to see it.

After checking, we went to the door guys (all these guys are from the Merbuk Platoon) and I give my hand to have the chop. But he asked for my ticket instead and chopped it. After we passed the door, we passed another two guys who chopped our hand. Hello! Why can’t the ticket guys chopped our hand too when he did chopped our tickets? How difficult would it be to chop our hands and tickets together at the entrance? Damn stupid to have one place to have our ticket tear, one place for ticket chop and another place for hand chop.

We went to have the seats where we can see the stage directly since the stage was more to the right of the hall. Even we get the 2nd last row, it is still very clear. All thanks to the 1,000 people who had decided not to come. I figured out that there are less than 400 people in the hall, with 4-5 people screaming and scolding for the late of show.

Rockerzz Rulezz - All Starzz Concert 08

See the stage is not centered. No background decorations too.

About 9pm, the musicians started to walk pass the hall. Only at 9.15pm, Didi, the MC of the concert came out and performed a dangdut song. Hello.. We are at a rock concert! What the hell is dangdut doing here? Then we were entertained by a small boy who shows his drumming skills. Not bad for a young boy.

Rockerzz Rulezz - All Starzz Concert 08

Didi and friends doing a dangdut tune.

At 9.40pm, the Malaysian musicians that will perform with Nash and Mus, take on stage with some of their old songs. These guys used to have their own bands but decided to let them RIP and decided to be guest musicians.

Rockerzz Rulezz - All Starzz Concert 08

Nash singing “Tiada Lagi Kidungmu” song.

Almost passed 10, Nash came out and started to perform. More people started to go near the stage to have his picture taken. Yeah, you are allowed to go in front and take pictures and record videos. You can stand there as long as you like too! I did took some pictures but mostly turned dark even with flash and decided to focus more on video taking. I did record his “Tiada Lagi Kidungmu” song.

Quite enjoy with his performance. One funny part is he decided to take off his t-shirt and gave to his fan but failed to button up his denim jacket since it is a bit tight for him. He had to hold on to it till the end of his show.

Rockerzz Rulezz - All Starzz Concert 08

Nash holding on his jacket to prevent showing his flesh.

Around 10.30pm it is time for May Mus to performed. This is the real rockers that still have the look and style way back in the 80 where I used to see him performed at Muzik-Muzik on TV3.

Rockerzz Rulezz - All Starzz Concert 08

Mus, the true ROCKER.

I can say this is the part where most of us enjoyed as we sang a couple of songs together. One of them is “Cintamu Mekar Di Hati”. Before he left, he did sing a new song from his yet to release solo album using a minus one.

Mus (May) – Cintamu Mekar Di Hati – Watch more Free Videos

11.20pm, Wings substitute Kristal came and performed with a folk song “Rasa Sayang” in rock version. Some other some are “Resam Pak Belalang”, “Delaila”, “La Obe” and “SMS”.

Rockerzz Rulezz - All Starzz Concert 08

Razlan the Kristal singer. Does he look like Awie 20 years ago?

12.15pm our own local rock singer Yazid of Lovehunters came out. He did “Ku Ukir Namamu” and “Sambutlah Kasihku” with his acoustic guitar and invited a female to sing with him. Not bad for a legend local singer that still has his fans sang along these two songs. After that he continues with the Lovehunters singing his songs that I’m not familiar with.

The show ended almost 1am. Overall it is a good concert although with the technical problem of the late coming. It’s worth paying SGD$38 for a three and a half hour show. Congratulations to Aida Rockerzz Rulezz! Hope you learned the lessons and I guess you will go back to Temasek Poly to have your next event. One suggestion though, if you can’t bring Wings, I hope you can bring back Mus and May to Singapore.

Can Team Singapore Win One Olympic Gold This Time Round?

First of all I would like to congratulation the women’s table tennis paddlers for making through to the final. Thanks to Feng Tainwei who saved the day yesterday by winning both her singles matches.

I did not managed to catch the first doubles and singles as I had to send my mother for her appointment. The score line was Singapore 1 – South Korea 1. I was shocked that Li Jiawei lost her singles since all Singapore hope is on her shoulder. She lost her patience to Kim Kyung Ah for playing defensive.

At the 3rd match, Li Jiawei and Wang Yuegu did not have much problem beating their South Korea doubles opponents winning all the 3 games.

Wang Yuegu was the one who going to play in the 4th match against the China-born Dang Ye Seo. While watching the game being played, I had predicted that Wang Yuegu will lose the match since she can’t cope with her opponent’s quick attacks and backhand flicks. After 33 minutes, the score line was level to 2 points each.

5th match was between Feng Tianwei and Park Mi Young. This match was the longest of all the single matches between Singapore and South Korea. Feng was leading by 2 games before Park changed her approach, mixing attack with defence and won the game. In the 4th game, the game become interesting as the expedite system was kicked in after the maximum 10 minutes of play had ended. What this system does is it prevents a player (server) from playing defensive. The receiving player will score a point when he/she manages 13 returns.

At the end of the 47-minute encounter, Feng Tianwei beat Park Mi Young to make it 3-2 scoreline with the help of the expedite system! Park was forced to move out of her comfort zone as she needed to end the rallies faster and this make Feng played to her rhythm and dictating play again.

The question now… can Team Singapore beat China at their home town in the final? I think not because we will need to give more from what we had produced in the semi-final.

Goodbye Bukit Timah Fire Station… Welcome SPECTRA…

A couple of weeks ago, I was wondering why the old Bukit Timah Fire Station and buildings along Upper Bukit Timah Road are having a new makeover.

Goodbye Bukit Timah Fire Station... Welcome SPECTRA.
Photo from www.clubsnap.com.

I found out here that the most famous landmark of Bukit Timah is under construction to be transformed into a bustling centre for education, arts, sports and adventure.

Vacant since April 2005 as the firemen and families had already moved to the new Bukit Batok Fire Station located along Bukit Batok Road.

Built in 1956, the 4th fire station to be built in Singapore was leased out to Spectra Investment for 3 years. It will become Singapore’s first and only fun-filled Arts and Adventure enrichment hub for young artists, musicians, crafters, designers and great outdoor adventurers, under one roof.

Come September, I’m wondering how the traffic condition at the junction of Upper Bukit Timah Road and Old Jurong Road will be when vehicles starts to use the distinctive red doors.
